The making of:

The Imitation of Myst

Ha! Like anyone gives a shit...
The imitation theme probably demands "making of" stuff even if nothing else does :-)
I'll include some "tech" info below, but first; by virtue of reading this, I presume you have some interest in what goes on behind stuff like this, which indicates that you might do Stuff[TM] yourself, which raises the possibility that you might be able to help me... Specifically; with the HTML side of things... :-) I've had a reasonably thorough search of the net to find the following, but still don't know how to do these things:

Sound. I want to set a thing up so that when the player clicks on the link, a sound file is played (preferably a definable number of times) as well as the link actually still working and taking the browser to the desired place... Furthermore, I want to do this without hideous side-effects such as the sound player creating a new window for itself, rather than staying embedded, etc. I'm currently looking into Emblaze, but I suspect it will want to cost more than I want to pay :-) Anyone know how to do this?

Animation. Using Gif Construction Set, making animated gifs is no problem, implementing them the way I want to, however is. Could anyone tell me how to go about setting up an animated gif such that when an image is clicked on, the animated gif replaces it (ie so that something starts animating when you click on it) and a link is activated taking you to wherever. (And a sound too... :-) I get the impression these problems are easy to solve, but I haven't got the time to learn more than the basics of HTML (and what I have tried (or poached from other pages) has not been completely satisfactory).

Tools:

  • Time (always a problem :-)
  • Software:
    • 3D Studio Release 4 (modeling, rendering)
    • Vistapro (DXF generation for 3D Studio)
    • Netscape Navigator Gold (HTML editing)
    • NS Communicator Page Composer (HTML editing when I got sick of NS Gold :-)
    • MapEdit (imagemaps)
    • Riven (inspiration)
  • Hardware:
    • Pentium "classic" 150mhz
    • Whatever Geocities uses to store the stuff :-)
  • Wetware:
    • Imagination (a touch here and there)
    • Brain[TM] Organic Processing Module (this and that)
All models (ie Ryven and all the objects in it) and all their surface materials are original work by me.
No floppy disks were harmed or killed in the production of Ryven.
[This is because no floppy disks were used. Floppy disks suck.
Scratching sand with a stick is a faster and more reliable method of storing information.]
